farewell to a rotten old friend…

I mean this in the best way!

For the past 15 years, (that’s how long I’ve been going to the Fort McKavett star party) this old “hanging tree” has been our observing companion at Fort McKavett.

It has been the first thing I looked for upon arrival at the Fort and has always been the last thing I said goodbye to when leaving.  It has been a constant sentinel on the observing field and there’s no telling how many others have a fondness for it in some form or fashion.

Not to mention the birds, insects and furry little critters that made it their home when it was thriving ‘back-in-the-day’.

I’ve always known it in its current state of deadness….well, there used to be a little more of it, but over the years, it has lost small limbs to nature and decay.  Soon, it will be cut down and removed- I guess it’s just too decayed to be safe anymore.

Anyway, I thought it was kind of interesting and appropriate to see it fading in the morning fog as I left the Fort this morning.

Farewell old friend, you have been a great observing companion!

I can’t read comments here anymore, so drop me a note at astrobeck at gmail dot com if you like!
