ISS, Mars, the Moon and Venus……oh my!

Watching this morning’s early ISS pass was the perfect way to begin the week.

Orion’s belt stars are on the far right of the frame while Mars is the red dot in the upper center near where the trail left behind by the international space station begins.

The Moon is the bright blob in the clouds and Venus is the brilliant “star” below it.

The ISS path ends between Castor and Pollux in Gemini.  The asteroid Vesta is below and left in the trees….more about Vesta in a few days.

Blueberry Syrup and Old Fashioned Vanilla

Evenings like tonight are the kind that make me wonder why everyone on the planet is not enamored with looking up at the night sky.

When the golden shades of afternoon light blend into deep violet and indigo as the night unfolds- well I’m often hypnotized by it and often wonder how many others are outside enjoying the view.

It’s kind of like blueberry syrup drizzled on a scoop of old fashioned vanilla.

Delectable!

Mercury is the tiny speck just below the power line and Saturn lurks low in the dip in the trees at the center of the image.

The Perseids are here!

Look up tonight after 9PM for the Perseids!  They’re here and they’re the best show in town!

You don’t need a scope or binoculars to enjoy the show-just a dark sky.  You can see part of Cassiopeia in the upper left of this photo.

On the Wire

Thursday morning found the Full Moon ensnared in the neighbor’s power lines.

Jupiter sits safely in the distance as a tiny speck at the trapped Moon’s upper left while a bird watches the show.  August’s Full Moon is known as the Sturgeon Moon, but with this heat wave we’ve been having, I think the Melting Moon is a more appropriate moniker.

Soon, an observatory will be parked in the yard.

This one will be moved and repainted.

Life is great!
